BEA is a nonprofit organization that has transformed a 31-acre property known
as Boxerwood Gardens into a nature center for Lexington, Rockbridge County and
Buena Vista school children. Its mission is to educated and inspire people
of all ages toward becoming successful and environmentally responsible stewards
of the earth.
Boxerwood has membership of 300 households and publishes a quarterly
newsletter. It serves eight elementary and two middle schools and is host
of nearly 100 class visits in each fall and spring season.
Award recipients and their guests attended a recognition luncheon in the Richmond
area. The event marked the ninth year of the statewide environmental
recognition program, which this year made eight awards. The awards honor
individual and organizations that demonstrate outstanding and innovative
contributions to protect and enhance Virginia's natural resources.
